Short Description of Project
This site tells the story of FIRST, Fellowships in Research
and Science Teaching, as a model for enhancing the pool of
under-represented groups in science and science leadership.
FIRST is the largest and longest running science postdoctoral
training program in the country and is a collaboration among
Emory, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Spelman, and the Morehouse
School of Medicine. In 20 years, FIRST has nurtured 200
scientists into the professoriate and science leadership at a rate
25X that of the national average for African-Americans and twice
that for women. This story is told through the FIRSTers and
their experiences.
